Celebrating 2018 Looking Forward to 2019

Dear Members and Supporters of LHHV:

As we approach the beginning of another new year, I’m looking forward to what 2019 will have in store for LHHV. While 2018 was a year of transitions, it was also a year of growth within the Laurel Highlands.

2018 was a Record-Breaking Year for Our Organization

  • We held our largest and 1st ever Cambria County Arts and Heritage Festival. In partnership with the Cambria County Commissioners and other friends, we promoted Non-Profit Organizations, Veterans Groups, Business, any others to showcase their efforts and historical history.  With over 3000 visitors, it surely was a great start.
  • We welcomed many new members & friends during 2018.
  • We conducted the annual Veterans Breakfast and Bike Run at Rocky’s Tavern. We had over 40 veterans receive recognition.  The event in 2019 will be held June 15.
  • We attended the Jackson Township Heritage Festival, again acting as an outreach to the local community.
  • We continued to maintain work on the Honan Ave Community Hiking and Biking Trail, including our Veterans Memorial. Last year we had a series of events that resulted in damage to our memorial.  With the recovery fund in place, we were able to replace the stolen flagpole, lights and flags.
  • We had the support of Cambria County Work Group who maintained our trails, and other misc. jobs.

What’s in Store for our Veterans Memorial

In 2018, The Cambria Somerset Authority (CSA)  gave LHHV permission to build a Veterans Memorial Park. Our park will provide a learning experience of all wars and conflicts, where many young men and women of our region sacraficed their lives for our freedoms.

The Freedom Trail will weave thru the park, with stations along the way depicting our military history.

Temporary Camps will have a lasting impact on how soldiers camped and fought.

Our 2018 Veteran Support Programs

In 2018 we conducted over 8 food drives and supported over 32 veterans, in our area that found themselves in need.

Where 2019 Leads Us

I’m excited to be working with a fantastic board that’s dedicated to providing the highest quality service to our members.

I’m excited about resuming my efforts in the New Year, as we tackle new projects and continue our efforts in supporting the Veterans Community and our ethnic roots.

We are looking forward to offering more Free Educational Programs at Hinckston Run Dam, during the 2019 season.

With the support of UPJ, Penn State and Cambria County Community College, we will be able to provide a series of free educational programs.

Area Students and Adults can learn different ways they can help our environment, restore nature, preserve our regions diverse wildlife and celebrate our regions rich history.

And last, but definitely not the least, I’m excited to roll out new member benefits and features in the upcoming months!

As we look forward to a new beginning, I’d like to wish you a very merry holiday season and a happy new year!

I hope you have a joyful and relaxing break.

Please take time for yourself to recharge so we can continue making the biggest impact possible in our communities.

I’m looking forward to what the New Year will bring LHHV community!

Sincerely,

Ronald J. Shawley, Executive Director
