LAUREL HIGHLANDS HISTORICAL VILLAGE- FEBRUARY 14, 2017 MEETING AT SCHEZUAN RESTAURANT IN JOHNSTOWN, PA.
Members Present: Debbie and Dan Gates, Paulette Baker, Doug Yonker, Patti Defibaugh, Luke and Ron Shawley
Doug Yonker called the meeting to order at 6pm. Paulette Baker said a prayer for the group. Patti Defibaugh gave the treasurer’s report. Beginning balance was $1,160.36. Herr’s chips were purchased at $23.76 and a gift card for groceries was purchased for Vincentz family due to death-we work with them with the prisoner’s help at Honan Avenue Trail. A check was written to East Taylor Twp for Fire Hall of $200.00 for Strange Encounters 2017. Balance is $916.60. LHHV liability insurance is due soon. Paulette gave Patti information to get in touch with insurance company. Patti donated a roaster to the group that she purchased at Walmart.
Doug gave the President’s report. He stated we have a lot of activities planned for the upcoming year. He asked that all group members be more professional when they interact on behalf of the group. He does not want members to look like homeless individuals when they are conducting group business. Doug would like to see the group recruit some new members.
Vice President Debbie Gaates has been very active with some other groups. She is proposing the group sponsor a Wine Tasting/Dinner/Dance in late summer or early fall. Tickets would be $50 per indvidiual and $90 per couple. The Wine Tasting people had an unexpected event and are unable to attend the meeting tonight. Debbie will meet with the owner Sunday. She would also like the group to utilize Geoffrey’s-a new Italian restaurant.
Debbie reports that BonTon Community Days are upon us. We can set up a table anytime bfore the event. It would be a pre-sale. BonTon will schedule our group on where to sit during the event. We have 100 books for this event. Debbie and Calvin have the books. The event is 2/23, 2/24, and 2/25.
Executive Director Ron Shawley reports that Earl Wydell from CSA request that we give them an itinerary of events for this year. Ron has planned trash clean-up, pavilion repairs, two hikes on hiking trail. Ron will notify Hal what needs done this spring. Ron has planned 4 nigh observations at Hinckston Dam for astronomy and photo club enthusiasts. Events will be held as the weather permits.
Ron reports he filed the 990 N tax report and it needs to be done in the next tax cycle beginning 03/15/17. Ron reports he has received 5 telescopes from Celestron for group use at the astronomy events. He also reports the following grants were denied as we do not own the Honan Avenue Trail property. Walmart, Penndot and DCNR grants all denied.
Patti will provide a sign-up sheet for the Strange Encounters Event at next meeting. We need to prepare a menu of food to be served, list of volunteers willing to work in the kitchen, Patti will take $5 admittance fee from adults and sell basket tickets. We need to get advertising started.
Paulette volunteer to contact the Ebensburg Mountaineer, Doug will contact radio stations, Tribune Democrat and Our Town. We will need to prepare a flyer for this event.
Ron and Patti have been in contact with Anna Raeger from Rocky’s Tavern regarding the May 13th Veterans Recognition and Bike Run.
The group has 2 activities that occur the same weekend. The Duman Dam religious festival and Jackson Township Festival. Members of the group have attended the Jackson Township Festival for many years. Patti made the motion we attend the Jackson Township Festival and Debbie seconded the motion. Consensus of all those present to approve this motion.
Debbie will chair the wine/dinner/dance committee. The group will have an opportunity to sample wines and the food prior to the event. Music needs to be obtained for the event. It would be a casual dress event, with a sit down meal. As a group member, if you help with service the wine and food you would be able to eat for free. If you plan to come to enjoy the event, and not provide any help with serving, you would be required to pay for a ticket.
John Augustine at Johnstown Vo-Tech has the students making signs for us to use at our events. Ron is to help with a photography class for the vo-tech in the future. Ron would like the group to hike this year sometime into the Laurel Mtn to a shelter at 271.
Ron made a motion that the group field trip be to the Highland Games at Idlewild Park in September. Debbie seconded the motion. All present were in favor of this motion.
Patti made a motion that for any LHHV group member to attend the yearly field trip, the member would need to help with 2 other scheduled events by participating in LHHV events during the fiscal year. Doug seconded the motion. All present were in favor of this motion.
Paulette has purchased property in Mundy’s Corner-approximately 4 ½ acres with at least 5 ponds, a huge old hotel and a trailer that needs hauled away. She paid $3,500 for everything. She is considering donating this property to LHHV group. She would deed the property to the group. We would be responsible to pay taxes and provide liability insurance for the property. Paulette extimates the taxes would be $600-$700 for this property a year. Paulette has also purchased the Honan Avenue Trail parking lot. She believes the taxes for this property would be $75.00 per year. She may donate this property to the group, and deed it to us.
Honan Avenue playground proposal needs to be a written detailed business proposal. The community would benefit from this. Pavement needs repaired, basketball hoops need replaced, may want to erect a gazebo, plant flowers and shrubs and get playground equipment. Paulette will research purchasing playground equipment with a grant. Garden club may help with planting of flowers.
Paulette informed the group of a Black History event on 02/25/17. Pyramids, a smooth sounding band will play and a meal will be provided. Tickets are $25.00.
